Elreen Ando's strong finish lands her at sixth in weightlifting
ELREEN Ann Ando put on a strong showing in the Paris Olympics with a sixth-place finish in the women’s 59kg division of the weightlifting competitions at the South Paris Arena.
Ando, who edged Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz during the qualification round of the weight category, registered a total of 230 kilograms after notching a personal best of 130 on the clean and jerk in her second Olympic Games.

YOUNG Julia Szeremeta of Poland gatecrashed a highly-anticipated Olympic rematch after pulling off a huge upset against Nesthy Petecio to punch a ticket to the gold medal round of the Paris Games early Thursday morning at the Roland Garros Arena.
The 20-year-old Szeremeta overcame a slow start by outworking the Filipina boxing star in the make-or-break final round to take the 4-1 victory in the semifinals of the women’s featherweight class.

Bianca Pagdanganan fights back to shoot 72; Ardina opens with 76
BIANCA Pagdanganan of the Philippines battled back from a cold start to shoot an even-par 72 on Wednesday at the start of the 2024 Olympic Games' women's golf competition at Le Golf National in Paris.
The 26-year old LPGA campaigner struggling to a three-over card through 11 holes but somehow found her touch coming in, finding three birdies including an unlikely one at the last after being forced to take a penalty drop after her drive.
The other Philippine bet, Dottie Ardina, opened with a four-over 76 in a round marred by a double-bogey at the par-4 15th hole and a bogey at the last.

John Ceniza's Paris run ends after a 'no lift' in snatch
JOHN Ceniza made an early exit at the start of the Philippines campaign in the weightlifting competitions of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Ceniza tallied a no lift in all three attempts at 125 kilograms in the men's 61kg division of the snatch.
With him as a DNF (did not finish), Ceniza did not gain an entry in the clean and jerk in a flat start for the weightlifting team which was coming off a gold medal win by Hidilyn Diaz in the Tokyo Olympics three years ago.

Villegas takes bronze after falling to Turkish foe in semifinals
AIRA Villegas’ bid for Olympic glory came to an end Wednesday morning (Manila time).
The Filipina fell prey to an experienced and superior opponent in Buse Naz Cakiroglu as the Turkish fighter pulled off an impressive unanimous decision in their semifinal encounter in the women’s 50 kg class of the Paris Olympics at the famed Roland Garros stadium.
The 28-year-old Cakiroglu, a silver medal winner in the Tokyo Olympics four years ago, was the precise and accurate puncher between the two, scoring a standing eight count in the opening round to set the tone of the lopsided victory that earned her a spot in the gold medal round.

EJ Obiena places fourth in men's pole vault finals
EJ OBIENA missed a podium finish in the 2024 Paris Olympics, taking the fourth spot in the men’s pole vault final at the Stade de France in a painful result for millions of Filipinos who had high hopes of him winning a medal.
Obiena failed to clear the bar at 5.95 meters in all three of his attempts to dash the No. 2 pole vaulter’s chance of capturing a medal in this Games.
The fourth-place finish was a marked improvement from Tokyo where he placed 11th, but it was still unfortunate result for the man being groomed to be the next medalist for the Philippines following Carlos Yulo’s two-gold haul in gymnastics over the weekend.

Lauren Hoffman misses semifinals berth in the repechage round
LAUREN Hoffman finished last in Heat 3 of the repechage round of the women’s 400m hurdles, ending her campaign in the 2024 Paris Olympics athletics competitions at the Stade de Paris.
Hoffman clocked 58.28 seconds to place eighth in the third and final heat, while finishing 20th among the 21 hurdlers in the repechage round.
The top two finishers in each of the three heats in the repechage advanced to the semifinals.

THE man they fondly call Caloy is now a golden boy at the Olympics.
Carlos Yulo finally claimed the only gold medal that evaded him in his decorated career, ruling the floor exercise of the 2024 Paris Olympics in front of an audience at the Bercy Arena and to the delight of a Filipino nation on Saturday.
Yulo took the gold in style, scoring 15.000, the first time he breached that mark in this Olympics after scoring 14.766 in the qualification and 14.333 in the all-around final.
Yulo’s score is also the highest by any gymnast in the floor exercise in this Olympics.

Villegas repeatedly backed off her 29-year-old Algerian foe with her stinging left jab and quick combinations, enabling her to get all of the five judges’ nod in the first round on the way to the 5-0 victory at the end of the bout.

Carlos Yulo places 12th in men's all-around gymnastics finals
CARLOS Yulo ended up without a medal in the men’s individual all-around on Tuesday, but he still has plenty of reasons to be optimistic to win one, or maybe even two medals, in the coming days of the 2024 Paris Olympics artistic gymnastics competition in Bercy Arena.
Yulo, as expected even by him, failed to land a podium finish by placing 12th with a total score of 83.032 after six apparatuses in the first of three final events in this Games.
Even though he came up empty handed after Tuesday’s competition, the Filipino star gymnast got a good workout ahead for his two final events in the floor exercise and vault, registering decent scores in those apparatuses.
