CARLOS Yulo is in line to vie for three medals in the Paris Olympics after a strong showing in the qualification of the men’s artistic gymnastics on Saturday at the Bercy Arena.
The 24-year-old Yulo had an excellent performance in the floor exercise where he is currently running at second with a score of 14.766 at the end of the second subdivision.
The Filipino gymnast is also within range to claim the top 24 and a finals spot in the individual all-around after scoring a total of 83.631 in the six apparatuses.
Yulo though is still clinging for another shot at the medal in the vault final after totaling 14.683 to place at sixth with still one subdivision to go later in the day where about 30 gymnasts will still be competing.
By virtue of his effort in the floor exercise, Yulo already atoned for his poor showing in the Tokyo Olympics three years ago where he only placed 44th in his specialty event.
Yulo was also respectable in the other apparatuses with scores of 13.066 in the pommel horse, 13.000 in the rings, and 13.466 in the parallel bars, also another marked improvement from Tokyo where he ended up at No. 47.
From the looks of things for Yulo, it is no longer a question of will he be competing in the finals, but how many events he will be vying for medals.
The men’s all-around final is scheduled on July 31, while men’s floor exercise and men’s vault finals will be on August 3 and 4 respectively.
