BINGING on Netflix might be the in thing now, but nothing beats surfing on YouTube.
The video-sharing website has a ton of content compared to the former’s still-growing media library, not to mention the limited access to the subscription-based streaming service. Another advantage of the massive content hub is the availability of tailored content, thanks to hardworking creators who continue to produce quality material.
One of YouTube biggest genres is sports, be it meticulously edited highlight reels, exaggerated hot takes on games, or scathing commentary on players. Creators are churning out more types of content by the day, and the topic of competitive physical activities is no different.
The content boom has reached the Philippines, and the following fans have shared their love for the game through some of these best Pinoy sports channels on YouTube today.
Jervis Masangkay (Subscribers: 10,443/Content: Women's Volleyball Highlights)
The owner of this YouTube channel really knows what warms the heart of volleyball fans. You can find your favorite female spiker’s highlights here, whether in the UAAP or corporate club leagues like the Philippine SuperLiga. Throw in his occasional Top 5 or 10 lists and what you get is the go-to place for anything around and above the net.
Eric Menk (Subscribers: 10,502/Content: Basketball podcast and vlog)
The former PBA MVP and 10-time All-Star is once again bringing the pain, this time by spilling the T on YouTube. His self-titled channel is split between his post-career vlog and podcast, Staying MAJOR, where he mostly talks basketball with top personalities. Menk also produces pop culture and non-hoops sports content.
CzarJulius/DPBAZONE Vault (Subscribers: 12,029/Content: Old-school PBA Highlights)
Miss the physicality, colorful commentary, and short shorts of the PBA’s early years? CzarJulius/DPBAZONE Vault, which appears to be currently inactive, is essentially an online library of games from past decades and old-school highlights, like a compilation of the greatest dunks ever or footage of intense player confrontations.
Christian Standhardinger (Subscribers: 17,324/Content: Basketball Vlog)
The Fil-German PBA star actually began documenting his journey in the pro ranks a year ago. From being drafted first in 2017 to opening up about the realities of being a pro, Standhardinger offers a closer look at the life of a prominent baller. Maybe he can upload new content after winning his first championship with San Miguel.
Hoops Highlights (Subscribers: 18,192/Content: PBA Player Highlights)
It didn’t take long for House of Highlights and MLG Highlights to inspire a local version of these NBA highlights channels. The Hoops Highlights feed is filled with rim-rattling dunks and sick crossovers, only instead of LeBron James and Stephen Curry, it stars PBA stalwarts such as June Mar Fajardo and Terrence Romeo.
Gilas Army (Subscribers: 43,788/Content: Team Pilipinas News, Highlights, Prospects)
Gilas Army is dedicated to everything about the men's and women's national basketball teams. The channel’s initial uploads were the usual highlight clips of previous international games and the latest news about Perlas and Gilas Pilipinas, then it started featuring potential future Team Pilipinas players.
Chambalero (Subscribers: 66,145/Content: Basketball Humor)
This channel isn’t exclusively about sports and basketball, in particular, but Chambalero comes up with the most hilarious NBA parodies. Their Tagalog dubs might be as out of sync as a Mexicanovela, but the exchanges will definitely leave you laughing to tears. Chambalero’s hoops and comedy success is far from a stroke of dumb luck, if you ask us.
PINOY BOXING PRODIGY (Subscribers: 103,413/Content: Philippine Boxing News, Interviews, Recaps)
When it comes to video content regarding the sweet science, it’s easy to create montages of power punches and flawless footwork. PBP, which has partnered with Fight News Asia, pushes the envelope by going beyond the boxing ring to discuss the combat sport and putting the spotlight on unheralded local sluggers.
Shady00018 (Subscribers: 110,842/Content: NBA2K Simulation)
The man behind the channel, who is part of the NBA LIVE 2019 Creator Challenge, can recreate any legendary moment in NBA history and fantasy basketball scenarios (LeBron as Thanos) using the popular simulation video game franchise. You know you’ve done well in life when Shaq and The Rock give you a shout-out.
W Gameplay PH (Subscribers: 514,327/Content: Philippine Basketball News, Rumors, Trivia)
W Gameplay PH recently hit half a million subs on YouTube, and deservedly so. There have been many channels that offer pretty much the same content, but Warren Salvacion, who is a former intern at Spin.ph, sets himself apart by adding personal flavor via commentary and personality to his uploads.
