UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas will miss the services of another wing spiker in Xyza Gula for the entire UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament.
An undisclosed accident suffered by the incoming junior in a training session last December led to a displaced tailbone fracture, the team said in a statement.

España’s ‘magic bunot’ in their Season 86 silver-medal run was given an initial recovery timetable of five to eight weeks — enough time for her to have rejoined the team in its Japan training camp last month.
Following a series of X-rays and further assessments, Gula was still experiencing significant pain on her back and has missed multiple training sessions since.

The Golden Tigresses were left to make the difficult decision of taking Gula off the Season 87 roster to prioritize her ongoing rehabilitation.
“It has been decided that she (Gula) will not be in the UST lineup for the upcoming season because her health and her future as an athlete are far more important than our campaign,” the team wrote on Monday.

Gula’s injury dealt UST another huge blow as it already lost the services of another key wing spiker in Jonna Perdido after tearing her left ACL in the Shakey’s Super League Pre-Season Championship bronze-medal match last November.
A huge chunk of the scoring load will now rest on the hands of Angge Poyos, reigning UAAP Rookie of the Year and UST’s leading scorer last season, ahead of the team’s title redemption bid in Season 87 beginning Feb. 15.
