ALYSSA Valdez has been officially named the flag bearer for the Philippine delegation during the opening ceremony of the 2015 Southeast Asian Games in Singapore.
The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) board unanimously voted to give Valdez, the reigning UAAP Season 77 MVP in women's volleyball, the honor of carrying the flag during the opening rites set on June 5.
Traditionally, the honor of flag bearer is given to one the best athletes of the Philippine delegation.
Larong Volleyball ng Pilipinas Inc. president Joey Romasanta is elated by the POC’s decision, saying the choice of Valdez as flag bearer heralds the return of the Philippine volleyball teams to the international scene after a nine-year absence.
“Alyssa is now the face of Philippine sports,” said Romasanta, who is also the vice president of the POC.
“It really makes a very strong statement that volleyball is here and back in the international scene having been absent for the last nine years," Romasanta added. "The POC saw it fit that volleyball be given the recognition and the support that it deserves."
A Philippine women's volleyball team last saw action in the 2005 SEA Games, placing fourth in the competitions held in Bacolod City.
