BEN Phillips is cleared by La Salle to play for Gilas Pilipinas in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games even in the event that it will coincide with the ongoing UAAP men’s volleyball competition.
Phillips has been practicing with Gilas as the Green Spikers’ men’s volleyball campaign in UAAP Season 85 reaches its final stretch.
But Phillips said Gilas will be the first priority as La Salle has been very supportive of his national team duties, from his volleyball coach Arnold Laniog to newly-appointed men’s basketball tactician Topex Robinson.

The 24-year-old Phillips will take part in the Gilas bubble at the Inspire Sports Academy in Laguna, and will also fly in to Cambodia if he is selected in the Final 12.
“Prioritize the Gilas training especially with our upcoming training camp. What’s really been helpful is that our volleyball coach is understanding and coach Topex and the rest of De La Salle management, they understand as well,” said the 6-foot-8 Phillips.
The two-sport athlete has been doing triple duties attending practices and games of the volleyball team, practices of the basketball team, while also joining Gilas training.
He and brother Michael are two of the collegiate stars in line for a spot in the Cambodia SEA Games with some of the notable players not making it due to injuries and prior commitments.
Regardless, Phillips said he will do everything to help the team even in practices.
“It’s really a blessing to be called to represent flag and country. It’s something you only dream about. I’m thankful for the opportunity and willing to learn all I can here,” said Phillips.
“Alam ko ‘yung sacrifice. We need to pitch in for our goal to bring back the gold. Whatever it takes, that’s what I’m here to do,” said Phillips.
