    WGM Frayna, Mendoza assured of silver despite loss to Vietnam

    JANELLE Mae Frayna and Shaina Mendoza lost to Vietnam, but the Philippines is still assured of a silver medal finish in the chess ouk chaktrang of the 32nd Southeast Asian Games.

    Frayna and Mendoza bowed to Nu Hong An Ton and Thanh Phuong Thao Pham, 2.5-1.5, in the battle of unbeaten teams in the women’s doubles 60 minutes.

    Vietnam took solo first place with its sixth win, with the Philippines sliding to second on a 5-1 mark heading into the seventh and final round on Saturday.

    National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) executive director Jayson Gonzales said the duo of Frayna and Mendoza is assured of the silver ahead of the final match against Cambodia.

    Frayna and Mendoza opened the day with a shot at the gold after winning over Laos.

    Mendoza drew and Frayna lost in the first set of matches. They drew in the second match against Vietnam, not enough to overcome their opponent.

      The women’s doubles team of Frayna and Mendoza joins the women’s T10 cricket squad that are assured of medals even in the middle of their competition for the national delegation supported by the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee.
