Pinoy muay narrowly misses double gold feat at Asian Youth Games

SAKHIR, Bahrain – Jan Brix Ramiscal missed out on becoming the first double gold medal winner for Team Philippines in Asian Youth Games history, narrowly missing the feat by the skin of his teeth.

The 17-year-old Filipino teamed up with fellow world champion Tyron Jamborillo to run away with the gold in the Mixed Team Mai Muay final on Sunday at Hall 1 of the Exhibition World Bahrain here.

He was then poised to win a second gold in the boys’ Wai Kru 16-17 final after ending up tied for the top spot with Pimpichien Chaiwan of Thailand, both amassing identical scores of 9.23.

Unfortunately, the two-time world champion lost via countback.

One of the five judges had given Ramiscal a score of 91, while the Thai’s lowest score was at 92, relegating the Filipino to the silver medal.

But the Philippines emerged the overall champion in the sport after edging Thailand for the top spot in the medal tally.

The Filipinos had three gold, two silver, and a bronze medal, while the Thais ended up with two golds, three silvers, and one bronze.

In the mixed team event, Ramiscal and Jamborillo were head and shoulders above the opposition, scoring a high 9.20 total, far superior to the UAE duo of Rakan Yousef and Aziz Alhammadi, who bagged the silver with an aggregate score of 8.30.

Nonetheless, Ramiscal ended up taking home a gold and silver for the muay national juniors team which delivered the most number of gold medals so far for Team Philippines’ campaign with a total of three.

    Aside from the Mixed Team, other gold winners for the sport that originated in Thailand were Lyre Anie Ngina in the girls Wai Kru 14-15 and Zeth Gabriel Bueno in boys Wai Kru 14-15.

    Other medalists for Team Philippines in muay are Jasmine Dagame, silver in the boys Wai Kru 16-17 and Blair Bituin, bronze in the girls’ -51kg combat discipline 16-17.
