THE Philippines jumped to 19th place in the Paris Olympics medal tally in Paris shortly after Carlos Yulo’s second gold medal in the men’s artistic gymnastics.
Yulo’s historic achievement enabled Team Philippines to crash the Top 20 from 32nd, joining Azerbaijan and Serbia which just hours earlier saw Novak Djokovic win the gold in the men’s singles in tennis.
The ranking is one of the highest rankings the country has reached in the medal tally at any point in the history of the Olympics considering the magnitude of Yulo’s feat.

Team Philippines reached a high of 15th place after weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz gave the country its first-ever gold medal in Tokyo in 2021.
The country eventually finished at 50th place with one gold, two silver, and one bronze medal.
Yulo bagged his second gold medal of this Olympic Games after ruling the vault, just a day after he captured the floor exercise title.
The medal count cannot reflect the ongoing campaign of Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas, who reached the semifinals of their respective divisions and are assured of at least a bronze medal.
Petecio defeated Xu Zichun of China via unanimous decision on Sunday to clinch a semifinal berth in the women’s 57kg division.

On Saturday, Villegas beat Buse Naz Cakiroglu of Turkey in the women’s 50kg class to also move past the quarterfinal round.
EJ Obiena is also in the hunt for a medal after he reached the final in the men’s pole vault.
