LEE Kiefer bagged her second straight Olympic gold medal in the women’s individual foil in Paris, beating US teammate Lauren Scruggs, 15-6, at the Grand Palais.
The 30-year-old Kiefer, currently a medical student at Kentucky, won the event after overcoming five opponents including Scruggs in the final.
Kiefer’s mother Teresa, a doctor who traces her roots to Tagum City, was on hand to witness her daughter’s matches, hugging her from the stands shortly after winning the gold medal.

The Cleveland-born Kiefer, who also has Lexington, Kentucky as her hometown, won a close bout to open her campaign, beating Martyna Jelinska of Poland, 15-13, in the table of 32 then dispatched Huang Qianqian of China, 15-9, in the table of 16.
Kiefer routed Flora Pasztor of Hungary, 15-4, in the quarterfinals, and overcame Alice Volpi of Italy, 15-10.

The final ranking in the women’s individual foil saw Sam Catantan of the Philippines finishing at 32nd out of 34 even after her 15-13 win over Mariana Pistoia of Brazil, and her 15-12 defeat to world No. 2 Arianna Errigo of Italy.
Maxine Esteban, a former member of the Philippine team who now represents Ivory Coast, took the No. 23 spot after her 15-7 loss to Pauline Ranvier of France, 15-7.
