EJ OBIENA has pledged the incentives he will receive from the Philippine Sports Commission to the medical fund of Filipina track legend Lydia De Vega, who is battling breast cancer.

Obiena is set to receive P250,000 from the PSC for notching an Asian record in the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, an amount he will donate to De Vega in full.

Obiena also said his advisers James and Carol Lafferty have also pledged to match the amount, enabling his team to donate a total of P500,000.

“I just learned of the plans of PSC to reward me with P250,000 incentive for breaking the Asian record. This is deeply appreciated, and certainly needed since my funding is still yet to be sorted, despite the mediation agreement.”

“However, it occurred to me that despite my own training needs, Mam Lydia needs this money more than I do,” wrote Obiena on his Facebook account.

A former Asian champion in the 100-meter and 200-meter events, De Vega once competed in the World Championship in 1983 where Obiena recently won a bronze in the pole vault.

De Vega, however, is currently battling Stage Four cancer, with her daughter and volleyball player Stephanie Mercado recently making a plea for help on social media.

“We hope this makes a difference and gives Mam Lydia added strength to battle this horrible disease,” said Obiena, who first met De Vega during the 2015 Southeast Asian Games in Singapore where the former Asia's sprint queen used to be based.

The PSC and the Philippine Olympic Committee have also pledged to defray the expenses of De Vega.

Chooks-to-Go has also chipped in to help De Vega.
