It's now official! PFF announces Freddy Gonzalez' resignation

AFTER LOADS of online speculation centered on a top official's resignation from the Philippine Football Federation, things have now been formalized.

The PFF published a post on their official website which revealed that the National Team Director and Men's National Team Manager, Freddy Gonzalez, has officially departed.

“It has been one of the biggest honors of my life to be a part of this team and I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity. This was a very difficult decision to make and one that required much reflection and introspection,” said Gonzalez.

So what's next for the former director? According to Gonzalez: “Now is the time for me to focus on other pursuits and opportunities, both personal and professional.”

PFF President John Gutierrez likewise had his say on Gonzalez' departure and acknowledged his legacy stating: "We are grateful for Freddy’s dedication and contributions during his tenure with the PFF, most especially his efforts to advance our national team programs. We truly thank him for his service.”

Gutierrez promises to carry on Gonzalez' legacy

Throughout his tenure with the national team, Gonzalez has been credited for his role in the National Team's improvement over the last few months. Last December, the Philippines managed to advance to the semifinals of the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup, which saw them secure a massive 2-1 victory over Thailand in the first leg.

Then currently in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers, the Philippines is currently at the first place of Group A.

Given the legacy that Gonzalez has established, Gutierrez promised to carry on his efforts.

“The PFF remains fully committed to building upon the foundations laid for Philippine football. We assure the players that we will continue Fred’s framework for the national team, diligently ensuring our programs are well-supported and thriving," started the PFF President.

He added: "We are dedicated to providing every available resource, and with the support of football stakeholders, we look forward to continued progress and success for our national teams in the months and years ahead."

At the end of the statement, it was also revealed that Assistant Team Manager Mikkel Paris has also stepped down. Prior to their announcement, there have been other notable exits from the PFF which included former head coach Albert Capellas.
