LAS VEGAS - Floyd Mayweather was quick to respond to criticism from fans who felt all he did was run away from Manny Pacquiao on the way to scoring a unanimous decision win on Saturday (Sunday, Manila time).
“I was moving a little bit, but I wasn’t moving a lot. I will come forward, he (Pacquiao) will come forward. We both went out there and done what we were supposed to do,” Mayweather told reporters later.
Asked if he thinks the fans got their money’s worth in a multi millon-dollar fight billed as the 'Fight of the Century,' Mayweather had a short response, saying “I did what I had to do, he did what he had to do.”
The proud fighter from Grand Rapids, Michigan, who at 48 (win-loss) is one win away from equalling Rocky Marciano's record, was also diplomatic in his response to Pacquiao’s claim that he won the fight.
“(He said that) because probably he has his moments. Sometimes we feel that way when he has his moments," said the 38-year-old before addressing Filipino fans who loathe him.
"But I want the Filipino fans to stay behind Manny Pacquiao and to keep supporting him. I love you guys in the Philippines … keep up the good work.”
Mayweather also said victory over Pacquiao did not truly define his career.
“I just won one fight. It will not define my career. Every fight played a major key, every fight was important to me,” he said.
