LAS VEGAS – The Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) denied getting a request from the camp of Manny Pacquiao about administering pain relievers on his right shoulder injury days before his scheduled welterweight title unification bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

NAC chairman Francisco Aguilar belied a statement made by Top Rank promoter Bob Arum that as early as Monday (US time) the Pacman's camp sought the commission’s approval for the use of Lidocaine on the Filipino’s injured shoulder, which he hurt in training at the Wild Card gym.

Lidocaine is used topically to relieve itching and pain.

Aguilar said the claim of Arum that he disclosed to the NAC details of Pacquiao’s injury five days before the match was inaccurate.

Instead, the commission chairman disclosed an appeal was made through him by Top Rank matchmaker Bruce Trampler for Pacquiao to administer pain reliever on his shoulder at least three hours before facing Mayweather in the ring.

The request also requested the presence of a ring doctor in Pacquiao’s corner in case the pain flares up during the course of the fight.

The NAC denied the request owing to its proximity of the bout.

“We were not aware of it until 6:30 p.m.,” said Aguilar, who added the commission wasn’t made ware of the problem during Friday’s weigh-in.

The Pacquiao camp, however, said pain relievers had already been used for the Filipino’s shoulder injury even in training at the Wild Card gym in Los Angeles and that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (Usada) had been notified about it in advance since both fighters were subjected to random drug testing.
