IS San Miguel Corp. (SMC) diverting its support from one Dominican school to another?

San Miguel sports director Alfrancis Chua hinted so as murmurs of the conglomerate pulling support from Letran's basketball program rages on.

The outspoken executive said in an interview with CNN Sports Desk that it really depends on what will be discussed once he sits down with SMC president Ramon S. Ang.

"Actually pinagmi-meetingan namin kung ano yung maganda," he said. "Naka-tatlong champion na kami dyan [sa Letran]. Baka sa iba naman kami tumulong."

Since Chua was appointed as special assistant to the rector for sports development and Petron became one of the Knights' chief backers in 2018, the Muralla side has completed a three-peat with this recent NCAA Season 98 triumph.

It was the first time since Samboy Lim laced his sneakers from 1982 to 1984 that Letran won three consecutive NCAA titles.

And this is definitely a feat to be proud of for Chua, who hinted that it may lead to SMC exploring other challenges.

But that really depends on what Ang says.

"Of course, [nakadepende yan sa] approval ng boss ko, ni boss RSA, kung anong linya niya ako dadalhin. Kung anong gusto niya, doon tayo papunta," he said.

One of those potential destinations is University of Santo Tomas, Chua's college alma mater.

There were talks between the two camps earlier this year for a possible tieup, but these bogged down as the Growling Tigers named Bal David as coach before UAAP Season 85.

Nothing's cast in stone, though, and Chua remains open to anything.

"Tignan natin kung ano pang sistema at paguusapan namin ni boss RSA kung anong magandang gawin namin dahil may tinutulungan din kaming ibang teams sa UAAP para di magpatong-patong," he said.

San Miguel also supports La Salle, one that has been there since the days of former chairman Eduardo "Danding" Cojuangco Jr., while also providing some level of help to the basketball programs of University of the Philippines and Far Eastern University, which happens to be Ang's alma mater.

"Siguro after this new year, mag-uusap kami ni boss," said Chua.
