CJ Cansino heard pitches from Baldwin, Racela, Pumaren bros before picking UP

What convinced Cansino to go to UP amid other coaches' pitches?

THINGS felt just right for CJ Cansino that of all of the schools which wooed him in this transfer saga, he chose University of the Philippines to be his new home.

"Nung kausap ko yung UP, naalala ko yung feeling nung gusto kong mag-college sa UST. Parang same feeling na dito ko gustong maglaro," he told Anong Tunay?!

Cansino, 20, became the belle of the ball in collegiate basketball last week following his sudden departure from University of Santo Tomas as a bevy of suitors came his way.

The 6-foot-2 court general did have a specific list of things he considered when he made the decision, but in the end, he stuck with his emotions.

And that dictated him to head to Diliman and join the Fighting Maroons.

"Ang hinahanap ko sa team is academics, pangalawa yung basketball, and then player development. Alam ko na halos lahat ng schools meron nun, pero ako yung tao na sumusunod ako sa gutfeel ko. Yun yung pumasok sa feeling ko nung kinausap na ako ng UP, na dito gusto kong maglaro," he said.

Cansino met with UP coach Bo Perasol and team manager Atty. Agaton Uvero on Friday afternoon and swiftly put the wheels in motion for his transfer as he's already enrolled in BS Sports Science through the Varsity Athletic Admissions System (VAAS).

The former UST team captain did admit that he was able to talk to a lot of coaches through the process and was able to consider the pros and cons if he indeed chose to head in those campuses.

"Nakausap ko sila coach Tab (Baldwin), coach Olsen (Racela), coach (Franz) Pumaren, si Manong (Derrick Pumaren), halos lahat sa UAAP at NCAA. Pero hindi ko yun nafeel nung kausap nila ako," he said.

Of those teams, only Ateneo and UP were able to make formal pitches to Cansino, with him ultimately deciding to go with the maroon-and-whites.

And this early, he's grateful for this new lease on life given to him as he moves on from his days in Espana.

"(UP) ang nagbigay ng second chance sa akin para matupad ang pangarap ko," he said.
