CJ Cansino's move from University of Santo Tomas to State U came in record time, with the beleaguered player finding a new home less than 24 hours since the news of his controversial departure from Espana.
It really shouldn't come as a surprise given the caliber of talent the 6-foot-2 guard has, being the UAAP Season 80 Juniors MVP.
Yet not a few Iskos were left intrigued by the swift admission process Cansino took in his move to Diliman.
Coach Bo Perasol, however, has an explanation, He said the process was really simple thanks to the Varsity Athletic Admissions System (VAAS) provided by the College of Human Kinetics (CHK).
"The moment the athletes under the VAAS are enrolled, they are regarded as regular students with the same passing grades and requirements to stay qualified in their respective colleges," he told Spin.ph.

In his case, Cansino, who was taking up BS Commerce at UST, picked BS Sports Science in UP as his entry course to the university. He can shift after a year, depending on his grades, said Perasol.
That explains why UP took needed just a day in the enrolment of the 20-year-old slasher. Fighting Maroons team manager Atty. Agaton Uvero made sure that the new recruit was secured in Diliman by Friday.
However, the UP CHK is only accepting VAAS "through the recommendation of the head coach of the respective UP Varsity Teams. The recommendation of the coach is based on their team's recruitment process."
But it's not limited to transferees.
In a past interview, Perasol said that all of the Fighting Maroons' recruits, especially the rookies, need not take the traditional UP College Admission Test (UPCAT) and instead can apply for VAAS.
"Hindi kailangan," he told Coaches Unfiltered. "Ito yung isang paraan kung paano ka papasok sa UP using your skills."
"Marami yan. Hindi lang sports kasi merong dance, meron din sa cheering, kasama din dyan. The last time, may mga 100-plus na applicants kami who were recommended by different coaches to be included in VAAS.
"So pag ikaw ni-recommend, they’re considered as getting inside the UP System because of their skills as basketball player, and not necessarily of their skills doon sa entrance sa UPCAT."
Perasol was frank in saying that VAAS is a key tool in UP's stringent recruitment process in hopes of positioning themselves for title contention in the coming years.
"It's been there for a very long time already," he told Spin.ph. "We don't expect our athletes to pass the UPCAT and be student-athletes."
Like any other student, however, approved VAAS applicants must still fulfill their academic obligations which is to enroll in at least five subjects every semester for two semesters every academic year and pass at least four out of five of those.
Pass those and they get cleared to play for the UAAP season.
Failure to do so, however, means a sit-out year, just like what Paul Desiderio had to deal with back in 2014 when he had to miss UAAP Season 77.
