GILAS Pilipinas coach Tab Baldwin will be stricter in the future when it comes to the national players' 'extra-curricular activities' that run in conflict with their Monday practices.
The American-Kiwi mentor allowed San Miguel Beer’s June Mar Fajardo and Star’s Marc Pingris to skip the second of their Mondays-only practice as both SMC endorsers had to attend a preset commitment, a shooting for a commercial with popular host Vic Sotto.
But it seems there won’t be a next time, considering the national team only holds once-a-week training sessions for the next seven months.
“It would’ve inconvenienced a lot of people besides Marc and June Mar (if I disallowed it), so I allowed that to slip,” Baldwin said. “But I made it very clear that during Monday nights, they’re out of bounds for any other activity than this from now on.”
Aside from Fajardo and Pingris, Ginebra standouts Greg Slaughter, Japeth Aguilar, and LA Tenorio missed training, although they attended, as they were allowed to rest on the eve of a PBA Philippine Cup match against Meralco in Biñan, Laguna.
Rain or Shine guards Paul Lee and Jeff Chan made an appearance, but were also in street clothes due to separate injuries.
“For them, it was a mental practice only,” Baldwin said.
“Certainly, in most of our practices, you’ll probably see some of the guys in street clothes because of their PBA schedules,” he added.
Hotshots big man Ian Sangalang was absent as he was also nursing a minor injury, leaving only nine healthy bodies who suited up in training in the day’s light training session.
