Why negotiations for Josh Reyes transfer to NLEX fell through

NLEX was looking for someone to undergo a mentorship period under Uichico before being elevated to head coach. Josh Reyes, it turned out, wasn't that guy

IT is but natural for Josh Reyes to seek out the head-coaching job of NLEX should he jump ship to TNT’s sister team.

That was the rationale given by a person close to Reyes on why he chose to pursue the head-coaching position of the Road Warriors instead of settling for the team’s offer to be an understudy of current head coach Jong Uichico.

The source stressed since Reyes is already a lead deputy at TNT, so it doesn’t make sense to move to another team in a parallel position.

At the same time, the source said the son of TNT head coach Chot Reyes is already qualified to become a head coach, having been a long time deputy with the Tropang 5G and formerly with Far Eastern University, while also serving as Batang Gilas coach in the past.

Spin.ph earlier reported the young Reyes was being eyed to become next in line to Uichico and initially, appeared amenable to the proposal.

Apparently, he had a change of heart and sought the head-coaching job instead.

SOURCES SAY Josh Reyes move from TNT to NLEX dims because of this

After holding a general assembly last week, NLEX reiterated that Uichico is staying on as head coach of the Road Warriors, with Borgie Hermida serving as lead deputy following the departure of Siot Tanquingcen.

NLEX management didn’t comment about the matter, but a person privy to the situation did acknowledge that Reyes is, indeed, already ripe for a coaching position, which unfortunately didn't match the current need of the franchise.

Besides, Reyes has long been under the mentoring of dad Chot at TNT.

“Si coach Jong is looking for someone na ime-mentor niya, and Josh doesn’t need no mentoring since he’s ready (to become a head coach),” the source said. “Both coach Jong and NLEX are looking at a transition period (in the organization).”

Nonetheless, NLEX is not closing the door on working with the young Reyes in the future.
