JOSH Reyes’ loss seems to be Borgie Hermida’s gain.

Sources revealed to SPIN.ph that instead of bringing in a new addition to its doaching staff, NLEX management decided to just develop one from its own ranks who will eventually inherit the coaching mantle from Jong Uichico.

During a general assembly of the Road Warriors organization, Hermida was promoted to first assistant coach to serve as understudy of the 63-year-old Uichico, whose contract with the franchise runs until the end of PBA Season 50.

The setup was supposed to be applied to Reyes, the lead assistant of his father Chot at TNT, who was being eyed to join the NLEX coaching staff and become Uichico’s alternate and, apparently, his heir apparent.

“Okay naman na. Everything went fine about the planned transition sana,” said a source privy about the initial talks.

According to sources, the Reyes camp asked that Josh become head coach right away once he jumps ship from TNT to NLEX.

“Nagbago ng isip nung nag-meeting ulit with management and wanted to take over the coaching job ng team pagpasok niya,” the same source said.

That left the Road Warriors to rethink their initial plans, and instead took a hard, second look on the coaching personnel the organization has at its disposal.

Insiders bared that the school officials led by president Dr. Bobby Laurel actually wanted to bring in Jarin as early as January 2025 to serve as consultant to then-head coach Gilbert Malabanan.

Back then, Jarin was still the head coach of Phoenix in the PBA.

Jarin, insiders said, was actually hesitant as he was given the option to be with the team occasionally in that role.

For the outspoken mentor who plied his trade in the amateur ranks and won several titles in both high school and college levels, he understood that being part of a varsity team necessitated building relationships with the players no matter if you're the head coach or just part of the staff.

His commitment to the Fuel Masters at that time, Jarin felt, prevented him from fulfilling those duties.

But when Phoenix went the other way and decided to part ways with him as its team consultant, these talks were revisited.

It turns out, Lyceum really wanted Jarin in after letting go of Malabanan at the conclusion of NCAA Season 101.
