Thanks, but no thanks: Tim Cone prefers staying in PBA than becoming part of Knicks staff

TIM Cone has made it known where his loyalty lies.

Although he welcomes the opportunity to work for a basketball legend like Phil Jackson and an NBA franchise with a glorious past in the New York Knicks, Cone said he’s not about to take his act anywhere else other than in the PBA.

The most accomplished coach in Asia’s first ever professional league got a ringing endorsement to become part of the Knicks coaching staff owing to his deep knowledge of how to run the Triangle Offense, Jackson's pet system.

American sportswriter and educator Roland Lazenby, author of five dozen books, including Bull Run! The Story of the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls, had recommended Cone to be part of the staff of coach Jeff Hornacek in an effort to help Carmelo Anthony and the rest of the Knicks buy into the system team president Phil Jackson had long wanted to be institutionalized.

Lazenby vouched for Cone’s hiring on his Twitter account @lazenby.

“Phil would be smart to bring @manilacone to NY. He’s the ultimate triangle coach in the world today. @PhilJackson11 should hire Coach Cone,” said Lazenby.

Cone appreciated the gesture, admitting working with Jackson and the Knicks ‘would be fun.’

“Can’t imagine how much I would learn from him,” the 59-year-old coach replied in his own account @manilacone.

“But I love the PBA. There’s nothing quite like it.”

Jackson and the Knicks came under fire again from American media after a fourth straight losing season (31-51) and failing to make the playoffs despite a roster that included Anthony, Derrick Rose, and rising big man Kirstap Porzingis.

Lazenby noted Hornacek is ‘not a triangle coach’ and thereby would have a hard time selling the system otherwise known as the ‘Triple Post Offense’ to the Knicks.

“Of course, Cone has won and won and won and won with the triangle,” he stressed.

The American sportswriter added Tex Winter, a good friend of Cone responsible for bringing the triangle to the Bulls during the era of the great Michael Jordan, would definitely suggest to Jackson that he bring in Cone to New York.

“Tex Winter would tell @PhilJackson11 that @manilacone would bring to the NYK a deep understanding of the triangle and how much experience it,” Lazenby tweeted.

“The great @manilacone is a triangle/defense expert who would contribute much to the NYK staff as an assistant,” he said. “He, Horny +Phil should talk.”
