SCOTTIE Thompson hopes to win more Philippine Cup titles after capturing the sixth PBA championship of his career.

Following the Governors’ Cup conquest last week, Thompson said he wants to see his team replicate its achievement in 2020 where the Gin Kings won a Philippine Cup title inside the Clark bubble.

The newly minted Finals MVP said the Philippine Cup will give his team a different challenge of attempting to win a crown without resident import Justin Brownlee.

“Iba rin ‘yung all-Filipino,” said Thompson. “Wala kaming Justin Brownlee nun. Para sa amin, team effort pa rin. Sana ‘yung mga ganung pagkakataon, ‘yung NSD spirit, mabigay namin every year.”

During the 2020 title run, Ginebra won the finals series over TNT, 4-1, with LA Tenorio being named Finals MVP. Thompson had a decent outing in the championship encounter, where he had 11 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists in Game Four.

The former Perpetual Help standout acknowledged that the Philippine Cup is the crown jewel of the PBA, which is why he expects the road to the title for that conference to be difficult.

“Marami pa ring teams na malalakas especially sa all-Filipino. Even lahat. Talagang grind lahat ng bawat laro,” said Thompson.

“Tignan namin. Sila coach Tim [Cone] na bahala doon. As a player, gagawin namin ang best namin, (gagawin ‘yung) system nila coach, at hindi kami magigive-up,” Thompson added.

In all, Thompson has four Governors’ Cup titles, all at the expense of Meralco including the most recent one after six games. He had also captured a Commissioner’s Cup title in 2018 where he won his first Finals MVP honor.

Thompson said both of his Finals MVPs are special, although he recognizes that the Governors’ Cup was the toughest since his team had to overcome injuries to key players Stanley Pringle and Japeth Aguilar.

“Pareho masarap pero mas masarap ‘yung huli. Maraming ups and downs pero nakuha namin ‘yung championship. Sobrang nag-struggle kami pero nag-stick kami as a team. Hindi kami naghiwa-hiwalay. Hindi kami nagsisihan.”

“Credit sa coaching staff for getting us tougher even sa ups and downs. Parehong masarap pero mas masarap ito dahil marami kaming pinagdaanan,” he added.
