CHICAGO - After approving his request to be released from the franchise, the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters are giving James Yap the dream gift.
Yap's jersey No. 18 will be retired by the team, never again to be issued to future Rain or Shine players, head coach Yeng Guiao said in a telephone interview.

"It's a tribute to his contributions to the organization," Guiao said as plans are still being worked out for the jersey ceremony.
It's also a well-deserved honor for Yap, one of the PBA's 40 Greatest Players, a seven-time champion and 17-time All-Star.
Now in the sunset of a fabulous career, it is unclear if the former University of the East star and the No. 2 overall pick of the 2004 PBA draft, will continue playing at age 41.
One thing is clear though, at least in the discerning eyes of Guiao.
"James is still serviceable. I think he can still play but it will really depend on how he will be utilized. His shooting remains elite but his quickness is diminished."
During his prime, especially during the four years when he was named PBA MVP, the 6-foot-2, 207-pound Yap was a tough cover at both the two and three spots.
There is speculation that Yap could continue playing but with a burgeoning political career, the San Juan councilor could just as easily devote all his time and energy in public service.
