THE PBA is seriously considering its first expansion in eight years, saying it hopes to add two more teams in the future to join current 12 member ballclubs.

PBA chairman Ricky Vargas revealed that expansion has been discussed during the board of governors' recent planning session in Boracay after another company expressed interest in joining the league.

But if it is to expand for the first time since 2014, Vargas said the PBA wants to have an even number of teams, instead of accepting only one company into the fold.

“When it was reported to us that there is some interest to come in, we said, ‘Why don’t we start looking at expansion to 14?” said Vargas during an online press conference on Wednesday.

“Because expansion to 13 will be more difficult to manage. So the board actually agreed that maybe, we should look at expanding to 14,” Vargas added.

The expansion plans come on the heels of Converge's acquisition of the Alaska team - lock, stock, and barrel.

Vargas said expansion is also a revenue generating venture for the PBA after the league took a hit financially due to the pandemic.

“There is one team that is strongly interested. If we do that, we’d like to expand to 14. We are looking at that process,” said Vargas.
