OUT to prove he’s one of the premier big men in the PBA today, Greg Slaughter has shed off some unwanted pounds in a bid to become more effective in the mid-season Commissioner’s Cup.
A trimmed Slaughter showed up at the Smart Araneta Coliseum during the defending champion Kings’ conference debut against Blackwater, which they unfortunately lost in overtime, 108-107.
It was Slaughter being in game shape that was among the positives that came out of the loss as the 7-foot big man showed quickness in running the floor and toughness in battling Blackwater import Alex Stepheson at the low block.
Slaughter later admitted what was already obvious.
“A little bit. Twenty five pounds in a month,” he said when asked if he did lose weight.
The Kings’ early exit in the Philippine Cup apparently gave the 31 –year-old center out of Ateneo the spare time to get in better shape for the import-laden tournament.
“I was able to have some time off to work on my body a little bit and get in better shape,” said Slaughter.
While he followed a nutritional diet, the Ginebra stalwart stressed its really more on putting the time and effort of working out that allowed him to achieve a leaner body.
“It’s a lot more on working out,” he said.
The result immediately showed as Slaughter complemented import Justine Browlee by finishing with 24 points, eight rebounds, and two block shots in a losing cause for the Kings. He was also the only Ginebra local to finish in double figures after the 44 points of Brownlee.
“Give some credit to Blackwater. They got this one off us, but it was just our first game,” said Slaughter.
“We just have to get ready for Sunday,” he added as the Kings are set to take on the Meralco Bolts next at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
