ANTIPOLO – It’s no secret why Converge had to employ PBA great Glenn Capacio as part of its coaching staff.

“Tinawagan ako ni (Gov) Delta [Pineda] na kung puwede ko raw siyang tulungan sa depensa. Siyempre nagpapasalamat ako na napasama ako sa kanila at mai-share ko yung talent ko nung naglalaro pa ako doon sa mga bata,” said the now 61-year-old Capacio.

Truly, one of the league’s best defensive guards of all-time is the new addition to the FiberXers’ coaching workforce under head coach Pineda.

Loaded with players capable of taking over offensively, the priority now is obviously on improving team defense of which Capacio is tasked to handle.

He had his first look at the FiberXers as a team on Wednesday in a runaway win over Titan Ultra, 103-82, at the Ynares Center.

Converge did limit the Giant Risers to 38 percent shooting from the floor (32-of-84), but Capacio said there’s still a lot of work to do for the FiberXers, who ended a five-game skid and improved to 2-5.

“Hindi naman basta-basta makaka-adjust yan. Hindi naman ang coaches magician, e” he said. “Kailangan mahabang preparation.”

“Tapos yung chemistry, maraming bago. Tsaka yung chemistry ng players kung paano sila mag-a-adjust sa coaching change. Since bago ako, hindi basta-basta yun, hindi makukuha overnight yun.”

Capacio is the third PBA great to be part of the team’s coaching staff after two-time MVPs Danny Ildefonso and Willie Miller.

The brother of the late player and San Miguel Corp. executive Ely Capacio was a decorated player himself, having won a total of five championships in a 14-year pro career that began as a direct hire of the Purefoods franchise when it made its maiden PBA season in 1988.

He also had an extensive coaching career in both the pro and collegiate leagues following his retirement from playing.

And after a decade since last being involved in the league as part of the KIA franchise coaching staff in 2014, Capacio is just thrilled to be back to what he loves doing best.

“Siyempre masaya kasi dito ako galing. Medyo naninibago dahil bagong atmosphere. Siyempre, nakaka-miss rin,” he added.
