AS Barangay Ginebra relishes its recent victory over Magnolia, Tim Cone wants his team not to get too high ahead of its next PBA Commissioner’s Cup assignment.
The Gin Kings defeated Magnolia, 103-97, on Sunday - their second against an undefeated team in the tournament. The first one came on October 9 when the league's most popular team outclassed guest team Bay Area, 111-93.
Cone has reason to be extra cautious since Ginebra lost to Phoenix, 101-93, last October 14 after the win over the Dragons.

“I’m more concerned about our next game than (the Magnolia game),” said Cone heading to Ginebra’s next game against winless Terrafirma at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. “We had a super high against Bay Area. They were undefeated and we were able to beat them.
"And then, we turned around and lost. It wasn’t a fluke. Phoenix just beat us from top to bottom and they’ve been playing great, great basketball. Hats off to coach Topex [Robinson]," Cone added.
The Gin Kings hold a 3-2 win-loss record for a share of third place heading to their 5:45 p.m. match-up against Terrafirma, which has lost 22 straight games and are currently at 0-6 in the ongoing conference.
But that won't make Cone relax.
Cone said the Magnolia win was such a high as it broke a four-game losing skid, all of the matches came when the PBA staged matches during the pandemic.
“We didn’t follow it up,” said Cone, referring to the win over the Bay Area Dragons. “And now, we turn around and beat another undefeated team, which is not really helping us that much because we still have losses.
“We always talk about never getting too high and too low. I think we got too high over our last win against Bay Area. We try to settle in and make sure to get the next one and see if we can create momentum,” said Cone.

“But this was a big one for us [Magnolia win]. It’s another high but we have to be careful because we haven’t won against them in a while. It’s similar to the Bay Area game. But hopefully, we can come out and re-focus. Hopefully, we can keep our focus and move forward,” said Cone.
Despite Terrafirma’s losing skid, Cone said he expects the Dyip to play their best game.
“As we always say about Ginebra, playing good is not good enough for us. We have to play great every night because every team will come out and play great against us. That’s just the way it is,” said Cone.
