SO as not to aggravate a busted lip that needed eight stitches to close, Calvin Abueva sat out Alaska's Tuesday afternoon practice at the Hoops gym in Mandaluyong City.
The energetic forward showed up for Alaska's practice at the Hoops Center less than 24 hours after being cut on his upper lip during Monday night's practice session of Gilas Pilipinas.
But team management just allowed Abueva to rest and watch the Aces' scrimmage from the sideline.
'The Beast' is also expected to sit out Gilas practice in the evening at the Meralco gym.
Abueva had to be rushed to the Makati Medical Center during the national team's training at the Kerry Sports Manila inside Shangrila Hotel after he was accidentaly elbowed by Almond Vosotros during Gilas' five-on-five scrimmage.
Alaska coach Alex Compton is taking a wait-and-see attitude if the former San Sebastian College star would be available to play in the Aces' game against Phoenix this Friday.
"We have to see what the doctors say Thursday," he said in a text message.
Gilas mentor Chot Reyes hopes Abueva is fine, although he reiterated accidents such as this one couldn't be avoided, be it in practice or on actual games.
"Hindi talaga maiiwasan yun everytime we have a situation like this," he said of the incident. "We always run the risk of something like that happening."
