PART ignorance, part surprise, and part glee.
It’s how Brian Heruela felt upon learning of the trade that brought him from Barako Bull to San Miguel and reunited him with longtime pal and former University of Cebu teammate June Mar Fajardo.
Contacted by Spin.ph when the news of the trade broke out, Heruela admitted knowing nothing of the transaction that saw him being shipped to the Beermen in exchange for Jeric Fortuna.
The burly guard said he had just come from the Barako Bull practice and nothing was mentioned to him about the matter.
“I really don’t know anything about this. I’m just here resting since I just got home from practice. All this is a surprise to me,” said a shocked Heruela in a talk on Tuesday afternoon.
“But it’s a business and I understand that. I was only starting to get comfortable at Barako Bull and learning the ropes there. As players, we can only do our best and play where we’re supposed to play,” the Filipino-American shared.
But surprise quickly turned to ecstasy for Heruela once details of the trade were explained to him.
“Wow, this is really a dream come true for me. Ever since we parted ways in college, I have always dreamt of playing with Abai (June Mar Fajardo) once again. I never thought that it would come true!”
Playing minutes at San Miguel is not guaranteed though for Heruela as resident playmakers Alex Cabagnot and Chris Ross alternate playing the point.
Heruela though, could not care less.
“I really don’t care about the minutes. I see it as learning opportunities especially with veterans like Alex Cabagnot and Chris Ross over there. Maybe there will be games that I don’t get to play and that’s fine with me. I will just do what I can to help the team, whether I’m on the floor or not,” Heruela said.
Atty. Baldomero Estenzo, mentor of Heruela and Fajardo during their time with the Webmasters, had a different take on the reunion.
“Brian (Heruela) will definitely help June Mar (Fajardo). He knows him so well so he’ll be able to get him more easy baskets.”
