THE NCAA condemned violence in any form in its sports events a day after reports emerged that one referee was beaten up on opening day of the league’s Season 100 on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Management Committee chairman Herc Callanta of host Lyceum issued the statement saying a probe is underway into what transpired after the game between Mapua and College of St. Benilde where insiders said one of the game officials was beaten allegedly by a group of four to eight people.

“If you heard the ‘Panunumpa ng Manlalaro,’ sabi doon nanunumpa pa rin kami na tatangapin namin ang anumang pagkatalo o panalo. So ibig sabihin, talaga sportsmanship at the top of the list in terms of values and what we want to portray in all of our events,” said Callanta ahead of the second playdate of the season at the FilOil EcoOil Arena.

The ManCom is set to have an emergency meeting also on Sunday to discuss the latest form of violence to mar the country’s oldest collegiate league.

NCAA officials however, declined to name the referee and the personalities involved until they pieced together the circumstances that led to the beating.

“Not yet. The details will come out later. We have to verify everything first,” said Callanta.

But the ManCom chairman added the referee already had his medico legal and had the incident logged in a police blotter shortly after.

The ManCom already had an inkling on what sparked the matter, Callanta said.

“Well we have an idea kasi it happened after the CSB-Mapua game. Yun lang. But kung pagtatahi-tahiin mo, puwedeng gumawa ng storya. Pero we don’t want to do that. We want facts.”
