GOLDWIN Monteverde will be appointed the new head coach of the Batang Gilas national team, sources told SPIN.ph on Tuesday.
The multi-titled coach, according to sources, has agreed in principle with the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) to take over the program following his success in the local high school basketball scene.
Monteverde led Chiang Kai Shek College to titles in different leagues including the 2011 Tiong Lian season, as well as in the Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championship, Fil-Chinese Amateur Athletic Federation, BEST Center Passerelle division, and Palarong Pambansa.
Currently, he is also the head coach of the Adamson Baby Falcons, who are favored to win the UAAP Season 79 crown after going 7-0 in the first round. Under his watch, the Baby Falcons also won the PSSBC and BEST Center Passerelle crowns.
Mike Oliver handled Batang Gilas this year, taking over from Jamike Jarin who just recently left reigning NCAA champion San Beda to coach National University in the UAAP.
Batang Gilas is set to compete in the Seaba Under-16 Championship next year, a qualifier for the Fiba-Asia Under-16 Championship.
Expected to join the pool is Ethan Kirkness, a 14-year-old Fil-Aussie standing at 6-foot-9 who is in the country for skills training. Batang Gilas team manager Andrew Teh said the plan is to have Kirkness play in the Seaba Under-16 next year to gain exposure in international play.
