ERIK Spoelstra is not the only member of the Team USA staff that has a connection to the Philippines.
'Shot Doctor'
Like Spo, former Philippine national player and preeminent shooting coach Chip Engelland will also be part of the US contingent that will arrive in the coming days for the 2023 Fiba Basketball World Cup.

Basketball fans in the eighties, of course, remember Engelland, one of the naturalized players who played for the late Ron Jacobs in a great run for both Northern Consolidated and the Philippine national team in that decade.
Engelland, 62, was part of Jacobs' team that won the 1985 Fiba Asia Championship in Kuala Lumpur and the 1985 Jones Cup in Chinese Taipei. He was also part of the NCC team that won the PBA Reinforced title and gave a US selection a big scare in the Intercontinental Cup in Girona, Spain that same year.

After leaving the Philippines, he had bigger success as a 'Shot Doctor' who worked with the San Antonio Spurs for almost two decades as an assistant to Greg Popovich before moving on to an assistant coach role with the OKC Thunder last year.
As the Spurs shooting coach, he worked with players like Kawhi Leonard, Tony Parker and Steve Kerr, which should explain his presence in the Team USA staff.
In Manila, Engelland's job is to make sure Team USA's long-range bombers are clicking beginning in the group stage, where the youth-laden team will play Greece, Lebanon, and New Zealand at the MOA Arena.
In between, 'Machine Gun Chip' is sure to reconnect with former teammates like Allan Caidic, Hector Calma, and Franz Pumaren.
