ZARK'S Burger believes Mac Cardona will make an immediate impact for the team even after a long hiatus from competitive basketball.
The former PBA player attended his first practice with the Jawbreakers on Monday, months after his basketball career appeared on the down swing when family problems forced him to turn to drugs.
But everyone deserves a second chance, and the 35-year-old wingman, who played for Talk 'N Text, Meralco, Air21, and NLEX in his pro career, exactly got that when Zark’s agreed to sign him up for the remainder of the PBA D-League Foundation Cup.
Team manager Sherwin Cantos admitted being surprised to see the former De La Salle star in tip-top shape when he showed for practice on the eve of the Jawbreakers' match against Marinerong Pilipino.
"First practice (niya) today. Kita naman sa practice today na magaling pa rin si Mac," said Cantos of the player known as ‘Captain Hook’ for his patented ‘tear drop’ shot.
"Maganda pinakita niya sa practice. Gulat nga ako na hindi siya ganun ka-out of shape. Kayang kaya pa."
Cardona will make his D-League debut on Tuesday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
At practice, Cardona was seen practicing the shot that made him famous during his playing career.
Cardona’s entry in Zark’s roster came just as the Jawbreakers are currently at the bottom of the standings with a 1-7 win-loss slate, a lowly record marred by a 76-point defeat against Tanduay.
Cantos believes Cardona could just what the doctor ordered for Zark's - an added scoring punch who will complement the Jawbreakers' top scorer Robby Celiz.
"'Yung experience niya sa PBA most especially offense. Having a former PBA Best Player of the Conference awardee sa team namin, malaki ang magiging tulong niya sa amin.
"Malaking help kay Robby 'yung pagdating ni Mac. Big boost 'yun sa confidence ng teammates niya knowing na may Mac Cardona sa team," said Cantos.
