The art of pro wrestling also lies on a gimmick

LAST MAY 25 and 26, Dexcon celebrated Dekada, its 10 years of professional pro wrestling with one hell of an event. Fabio Makisig, a stalwart veteran in the scene said in the press conference that, ‘You only need to watch once to become a fan of Filipino wrestling'. His words definitely rang true during the event with athletic prowess and high-flying antics in full display throughout the three hour event. Dexcon Dekada was well worth the price of admission.

To show that the Filipino scene has truly become world-class, they invited the Singapore Pro Wrestling Tag Team Champions, the Horrors. A tall lanky doctor in scrubs paired with a gibberish spouting man wearing a bloody apron is just a match made in heaven- I mean hell.

After all, the frivolous antics of a wrestler is make or break whether they become legendary or a flash in the pan. For the two though, who’ve been around the Southeast Asian wrestling scene for roughly a decade now, their act has earned them a lot of gravitas and their audience a bloody good time.

1,000 Years In The Making

A character is only really as good as its origin story and The Horrors indeed have a very interesting one. “The Good Doctor Gore and Butcherman have a mutual love for chick flicks. Love is red and we like the bloody kind. There’s hearts and a lot of screaming in both of them.

It fits us perfectly”, begins Dr. Gore. “The boss of Singapore Pro Wrestling put us together and he thought the Rom Coms of Pro Wrestling wouldn’t fly. So Horrors of Pro Wrestling it is. Alright as long as we could still be ourselves.” The two do have fun on the ring and it shows and it really helped them captivate their audience.

“There was also something about the Butcherman that drew me to him outside the ring.” Dr. Gore continued. “Maybe you want to tell the story yourself.” The Butcherman then looks at me with such intensity before speaking in passionate gibberish and body language before picking up and wearing the glasses that allow him to speak English.

“We didn’t plan on being a tag team if you would believe. But he was a horrific doctor and I was a horrific butcher so we were naturally drawn together. Our chemistry was just there.”

Dr. Gore had an unfortunate act in the operating room that forced him into the direction of pro wrestling. “It wasn’t my fault that the mistake happened to the patient. So they told me to choose to stop practicing medicine or get publicly fired. So I stepped down and found wrestling. Because guess what? In pro wrestling you can do what you want.”

For the supposedly 1,000 year old Butcherman, he found inspiration in a very unlikely place. “I really wanted to be brutal in the ring and out of it. Who was Terry Crews’ character in White Chicks? Yeah that guy! (Latrell Spencer) You know how in Spiderman, he gets bitten by a spider while Batman was bitten by a bat.

So for me I bit myself. When I bit myself the sky split open and this cleaver came down from the sky and cut me open. The cleaver talks to me and tells me he cuts my heart into two. One half is myself and the other is basically a demonic butcher who lives inside me right now. Dr. Gore puts medication in these glasses so I can talk to you. The common tongue.”

The Traveling Doctor and his Butcherman

With wrestling, the Horrors love that they get to travel while doing what they love. So we asked them how the Philippines has been like for them.

Dr. Gore unfortunately had some lamentations. “I’m quite disappointed because I thought the Philippines would be the land of the Philips. I haven’t seen alot of people named Philip. Even in this room I don’t think there’s a Philip.“

Apart from that fact however, Dr. Gore is enjoying himself. “The Philippines has been wonderful except for not meeting a Philip. I love the food though.” The Butcherman then starts eating his own arm before putting on the glasses to say, “The Chickenjoy is quite nice. But like I don’t want to eat too much meat before the match because I want to save my appetite”

The Horrors are as zany as they come and we love them for that they bring their own twist to help elevate our budding wrestling scene with their presence. The fans love them and they have the skills to show for it and that is why they are Singapore Pro Wrestling Tag Team Champions. I hope they do come back to grace Philippine shores once again because they are a bloody delight, respectfully.
