RIO DE JANEIRO — Hsu Shu-ching claimed Chinese Taipei’s first Olympic gold in weightlifting after finishing with a whopping 12kg lead over the Philippine’s own Hidilyn Diaz in the women’s 53 kg. class of the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The world record holder of the same event also wasted no time seeking to upgrade her 2012 silver medal finish in the London Olympiad, after then gold medalist Zulfiya Chinshanlo of Kazakhstan failed a doping test and was banned from competing in Rio.

Hsu is no stranger to Diaz as both have faced off numerous times, most recently in the 2015 World Championships. Hsu took home the gold while Diaz settled for bronze. Hsu also copped the 2014 Asian Games gold, where she set the current world record in their division, lifting a total weight of 233 kilos.

However, rude comments on social media have focused not on Hsu’s impressive achievements but unfortunately on her appearance, questioning her gender despite her excellent track record in competitions dating back to 2011.

“Yung Korea, ganda. Yung Taipei, gwapo,” said one comment, before others followed with serious jabs at Hsu’s gender.

“Mukhang lalake yung Taipei,” added another comment.

But Hsu has faced no complaints on her gender during her weightlifting career. What's clear is the 25-year-old lifter is a force to be reckoned with in the years to come, and the biggest obstacle to Diaz and the Philippines' dream of winning gold in the next Olympics in Tokyo.
