HIDILYN Diaz’s weightlifting gym in Zamboanga City got a major upgrade when the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) turned over new equipment to the facility - a big lift to grassroots development in the area.
The PSC Facebook page posted photos of the simple turnover ceremony of the equipment, which was promised by PSC chairman Patrick Gregorio a few months ago to help develop more weightlifters in Zamboanga City.
The Tokyo Olympic gold medalist said the weightlifting equipment is a tremendous lift for the young athletes' aspirations to excel as weightlifters just like herself.
Diaz built the weightlifting gym in Barangay Mampang after she won a silver medal in the Rio De Janeiro Olympics in 2016.
“Dahil sa weightlifting equipment na ito, tuloy-tuloy ang training ng mga atleta ng Mampang weightlifting club sa weightlifting gym na pinatayo ko last 2017," wrote Diaz on her Facebook page.
“Masaya akong makita na maraming kabataan ang sumusubok ng weightlifting at nangangarap maging isang medalist,” Diaz added.
Zamboanga city councilor Elbert ‘Bong’ Atilano and sports development officer Cecilia Atilano were present together with coaches Allen Jayfrus Diaz, Emelita Diaz, Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships medalists Alexsandra Ann Diaz and Jhodie Peralta, and 21 grassroots athletes that will be using the new equipment.
