PHILIPPINE records continued to fall in the Philippine National Games (PNG) as two-time Olympian Hidilyn Diaz set a new mark on the second day of weightlifting competitions at the University of the East campus.
Diaz, who competed in the 2008 and 2012 Beijing and London Games, lifted 100 kilograms in the snatch, and 123 kilograms in the clean and jerk for a total of 223 in striking gold in the 63 kg women’s open category.
The feat broke the five-year record set by Cecilia Atilano in the 2007 Southeast Asian Games in Thailand when she lifted 90 kilograms in the snatch, and 105 kilograms in the clean and jerk for a 195 total.
Kristel Macrohon also became a new Philippine record holder in the girls’ secondary 63 kilogram division when she lifted a total of 169 kilograms following outputs of 76 and 93 in the snatch and clean and jerk, respectively.
Macrohon shattered the old mark set by Leah Ruth Llena in the 2011 edition of the PNG when she had a total of 160 kilograms after a 75 in the snatch and 85 in the clean and jerk.
Diaz and Macrohon joined up-and-coming lifters Kelly Kay Rojas and Clark Cirico among the new record holders in the sport.
Rojas lifted 148 kilograms in shattering Emily Rosas’ 145 lift established in 2004 in the women’s 53kg event during the first day of action, while Cirico had 140kg in the secondary boys’ 46kg event to break Edmund Del Rosario’s record set in 1991 by a kilo.
