PHOENIX Petroleum Philippines has thrown its support behind the Olympic bid of Hidilyn Diaz through a sponsorship deal worth P2 million.
The memorandum of agreement was formally signed on Thursday at the Malacañang Palace with Phoenix Petroleum vice-president Raymond Zorilla and Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman William Ramirez.
Under the partnership, Phoenix Petroleum will turn over the money to the PSC, which will ensure that the funds will cover Diaz's expenses such as allowances for her and her team. The PSC will also be tasked to monitor her training program.
PSC chairman William Ramirez said the partnership was achieved through the initiative of Sen. Bong Go, who approached Phoenix Petroleum Philippines founder and owner Dennis Uy.
Diaz is elated with the support from the private sector since she will be competing in several more tournaments to qualify for the 2020 Olympics.
“For me, malaking bagay kasi maglalaro ako sa Olympics and there’s a lot of competition that I need to compete in and preparation towards the Olympics. Medyo mahirap,” said the 2016 Rio Olympics silver medalist.
“I’m so grateful for the support they gave me,” Diaz said.
