HIDILYN Diaz is dropping plans to retire and is now aiming for nothing less than a gold medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
In a press conference in Manila following her exploits in the Rio De Janeiro Olympics, Diaz bared that she is ditching plans her retirement plans after seeing how her silver medal feat has inspired a nation.
“Parang ayoko na muna mag-retire. Ngayon pa lang, nami-miss ko na ang pagbubuhat,” said Diaz.
“Tokyo (Olympics) po,” Diaz answered when asked what her next goal is.
Diaz said she is determined to win the gold four years from now in Tokyo after settling for a silver medal in the women’s 53kg division of the weightlifting competition.
“Siguro hindi na ako papayag na silver lang. Gusto ko gold. Pipilitin ko,” said Diaz.
Diaz arrived in Manila at around 5:30 p.m. aboard an Emirates flight from Dubai and was given a hero’s welcome at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3.
Among those who welcomed Diaz were her parents, who were in tears after seeing their daughter for the first time in a long while.
A press conference was later held where a media throng mobbed the newest Filipino sports star.
Diaz is scheduled to meet President Duterte on Thursday night, and had to catch a flight bound for Davao at 7:45 p.m. for the courtesy call.
Diaz is also expected to receive a check worth P5 million representing her incentive from the government during the meeting with the President.
The Filipina weightlifter will fly to her hometown of Zamboanga City on Friday where another warm welcome awaits her, beginning with a motorcade around the city organized by the local government.
