RIO DE JANEIRO — Hidilyn Diaz plans to use part of the incentives that she stands to receive for her silver medal in the Rio Olympics to put up a weightlifting gym in her hometown.

Diaz, the first Filipino weightlifter to win an Olympic medal, said she wants to buy the land adjacent to their home in the town of Mampang in Zamboanga City and put up a gym for aspiring weightlifters.

“Plano ko talaga bilhin ‘yung lupa sa side ng bahay namin. Kasi gusto ko patayuan ng gym para sa weightlifting,” said Diaz, moments after ending the Philippines' 20-year medal drought at the Games.

Diaz stands to receive P5 million as incentives from the government after winning a silver in the women’s 53kg division in the Olympics. More are expected to come in from politicians and the private sector.

Diaz said she wants to have the gym so that kids will be more inspired to take up the sport in the city where weightlifting is a hotbed.

“Mas gusto ko mag-inspire ng mga bata,” Diaz said.

Aside from her plans to pursue a course in sports science, Diaz said she wants to teach weightlifting in her hometown.

“Gusto ko mag-share, mag-seminar regarding weightlifting. Gusto ko mag-open ng gym na may strength and conditioning at iba’t ibang mga bagay,” said Diaz.
