HIDILYN Diaz snared a bronze medal in the women’s 53kg division of the 2017 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championship in Anaheim, California on Thursday (Friday, Manila time).

The three-time Olympian was sixth in the snatch with 86 kg but bounced back in the clean and jerk with a second-best lift of 113kg for a total of 199kg to clinch the bronze medal.

Sopita Tanasan of Thailand took the world title after topping the snatch and the clean and jerk for a total of 201kg, while Kristina Shermetova of Turkmenistan had a 204kg total for the silver medal.

The 2016 Rio De Janeiro Filipina Olympian finished with a silver medal in the clean and jerk behind Tanasan, who lifted 114kg.

Tanasan also topped the snatch with a 96kg lift, besting Rio Olympics gold medalist Hsu Shu-Ching of Chinese Taipei, who had a 93kg tally.

Hsu, however, was unable to compete in the clean and jerk after suffering an elbow injury.

Diaz, who won a silver medal in the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, is aiming to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics where she hopes to win the country’s first Olympic gold medal.
