Hidilyn Diaz opens bid for 2020 Tokyo spot with 11th place finish in worlds

    Nov 4, 2018

HIDILYN Diaz had a tough first step in qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic with an 11th-place finish in the 2018 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championship in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

Diaz lifted 93 kilograms in the snatch and 110 kilograms in the clean and jerk for a total of 203 kilograms in the women’s -55 kilogram category, a weight division above the -53 kilogram division she competed in the 2018 Asian Games.

The 2018 Asian Games gold medalist still has a long way to go to gain a spot in the 2020 Olympics. The World Championship is the first of many qualification tournaments within the two-year period. Diaz must compete in a minimum of six events and must rank in the top 56 in the world at the end of the qualification period to gain a spot in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Srisurat Sukanya of Thailand finished with a gold with a total of 232 kilograms, with Li Yajun and Zhang Wanqiong of China taking silver and bronze, respectively, with a lift of 225 kilograms.

Nestor Colonia, meanwhile, placed 13th in the men’s 61 kilogram division.
