THE Philippines picked up two early gold medals in its campaign in the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Junior Championship in Leon, Spain.
Angeline Colonia captured the gold in the total of the women’s 45kg, while Lovely Inan also ruled the total in the women’s 49kg category.
Colonia also took the snatch gold (74) and the the clean and jerk silver (88), while Inan claimed the clean and jerk gold (100) and snatch silver (79).
Colonia, silver medalist in last year’s Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia, lifted a total of 162 kilograms, setting a new personal best by 10 kilos. The 18-year-old took the gold by two kilos with Khemika Kamnoedsri of Thailand taking the silver (160) and Ioana Madalina Miron of South Africa bagging the bronze (154).
“This was my best competition, my best performance – but the gold medal was a surprise,” said Colonia, in an interview with IWF.net.
The jury ruled a no lift on Kamnoedsri’s final attempt at 90 kilograms in the clean and jerk that would have won the gold for the Thai lifter.
Inan nipped Karoll Dahyanne Lopez Alvarez of Colombia by lifting 179, winning the gold by just one kilogram.
