ALAS Pilipinas leaned on a blend of proven veterans and emerging stars to overwhelm Uzbekistan, 25-16, 25-12, 25-14, and open its 2026 AVC Women's Cup campaign on a high on Saturday at the Candon City Arena.
The Nationals never allowed their Central Asian counterparts to settle into the match, controlling the tempo from the outset behind the steady leadership of longtime pillars Alyssa Valdez and Jovelyn Gonzaga.

Valdez turned in a vintage performance of 14 points built on 11 attacks, two blocks, and an ace, while Gonzaga added 12 points on 10 attacks and two service aces, as Alas repeatedly found success from both pins.
Ces Molina rounded out the Nationals' quartet of double-digit scorers with 11 points on nine attacks and two aces.
While the veterans provided the stability, one of the biggest storylines of the match came from a newcomer.
Niña Ytang wasted little time announcing her arrival on the international stage, producing 12 points on eight attacks and four blocks in her first official appearance as a Philippine team player.
Sharpest start
Alas Wimen established control from the outset behind its disruptive net defense and relentless offense, with Thea Gagate tallying eight points from the middle as they pulled away late in the opening frame with an 11-4 closing run.
A pair of signature Valdez kill attacks then ignited a crucial five-point surge to seal the second set, and from there, the Philippines never looked back.
With the outcome all but secured in the third frame, coach Shaq Delos Santos comfortably went deeper into his bench before Royse Tubino sealed the straight-sets triumph.
Next for the Philippines is Australia on Sunday, 3 p.m.
