TWO Davao lady cops scored a giant upset of top favorite Brazil in the finals to win the gold medal in women’s beach volleyball in the 2017 World Police and Fire Games on Tuesday (Wednesday Manila Time) at Hermosa, Beach in Los Angeles, California.
Philippine National Police (PNP)-A composed of PO1 Karen Quilario and PO1 Lourdilyn Catubag of Police Regional Office 11 defied the tall Brazil Police Force-A 21-10 to rule the event, which attracted a tough field of 20 teams from different countries.
Catubag is assigned at Talaingod Police Station while Quilaro is assigned at Panabo Police Station, both under the Davao del Norte Police Provincial Office of the Police Regional Office 11.
PNP-A, coached by SPO3 Marilyn V. Mateo, actually swept the event with seven wins in as many outings.
In the semis, the Philippines had to battle tooth and nail against another giant squad Russia and narrowly escaped with a 23-21 win.
Another Philippine squad composed of PO1 Jessan Tano and PO1 Cassandra Ledda and coached by SPO3 Rosenda C. Quiao bowed out in the quarterfinals to the Russian Dynamo Police 16-21.
Tano is stationed at Tugbok Police Station and a member of the Davao SWAT of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), while Ledda is from Police Station 11, NCRPO of the Manila Police District.
The Catubig-Quilario duo began their campaign with a 21-5 rout of Hongkong Police Force-A, followed by a 21-10 win over their compatriots PNP-B, then took out a tough Brasilia Fermino squad 21-7, blasted HKPF-B 21-10 and capped their eliminations assignment with that nail-biting 23-21 win over Russia.
The PNP 11 delegation was headed by overall Regional Director PCSupt Manuel R. Gaerlan with team coordinator PCInsp Maria Angela Mirabel-Salaya.
PNP Team B defeated Brasilia Fermino 21-19 and HKPF-A 21-7 before losing to Russian Dynamo Police 16-21 in the quarters.
Canada took the bronze medal.
The PNP delegation is backed up by San Miguel Corporation (SMC). The Lady Patrollers thanked supporters SMC chairman and CEO Ramon S.
