NATIONAL women’s volleyball team coach Francis Vicente refused to name names, but gave a description of the type of player he would like to see at the tryouts starting in a few weeks.
Vicente is putting premium on height and leaping ability as he begins to form the team starting with the Manila tryouts set January 28, 29 and 31.
“Wishlist ko? Hindi ko puwedeng i-reveal ’yan. ’Yun ang sikreto ko,” said Vicente, when asked for names.
“As much as possible, punta tayo sa six feet na talented. Hangga’t maari, six feet above na talented. Now, if there is a 5-10 high leaper, angat na siya dun because of her leaping ability,” said Vicente.
Alyssa Valdez and Jaja Santiago are among the fan favorites but Vicente says he will wait for the tryouts to see who will show up.
“It’s hard to say. Hintayin muna natin ’yung tryout. Tignan natin at i-assess natin,” said Vicente, who also insisted no player has approached him to personally signify her intention to attend the tryouts.
The newly-appointed coach, however, stressed that matching the description doesn’t mean a player automatically fills the position.
All aspirants need to attend the tryouts, Vicente stressed.
“Kung 6-5, kailangan pumunta siya sa gymnasium. Magpakita siya dun kung interesado siya. Ang national team, Pilipinas ang representation mo. Hindi na club team. Hindi naman ‘yan university. Pilipinas ang dala dala mo,” said Vicente.
