WITH the experience gained in the Japan League, Marck Espejo would be a big boost to the Philippine national volleyball team if he decides to suit up.
Espejo, who played for the national team in the 2015 Singapore Southeast Asian Games, is set to return in the country this summer at the end of his contract with Oita Miyoshi of the Japan V Premier League.
It could be perfect timing, with the Philippines hosting the 30th Southeast Asian Games.
Will Espejo join the national squad?
There was conflict with the Larong Volleyball ng Pilipinas apparently leaving out Espejo from the national pool for the 2017 KL SEAG, and the latter declining to join training when the national federation declared it has opened its door for the five-time UAAP MVP. Still there are reportedly parties who are hoping to see the former Ateneo star play for the national squad.
For now, Espejo is concentrating on the Japan stint as Weiss Adler is mired in ninth place out of 10 teams, winning only two of their first 10 matches.
“Sobrang saya syempre pero mahirap din, first international club league ko, sobrang iba yung ambience and level nung league if i-compare sa Philippines,” said Espejo after his first few matches in Japan a few months ago.
“Sa pag adjust naman siyempre mahirap sa start pero kung gusto mo naman ginagawa mo makaka adjust ka naman kaagad diba?Masaya and very approachable ang team,” said Espejo, who reportedly has been turning heads with his big spikes even from the back row and against tall blockers.
The SEA Games would be a good opportunity for Espejo to again showcase his skills for the local fans, after a 2018 that saw him and the Blue Eagles get stopped by Bryan Bagunas and National University Bulldogs in the Season 80 finals.
