IT’S already been four games since new Ateneo head coach Thai Anusorn Bundit left the Lady Eagles’ campaign in the 76th UAAP women's volleyball tournament.
According to Ateneo officials, Bundit went home to Thailand in late December to fulfill his duties as coach of the Thai women’s national team training pool.
They Said It!
“Nagpaalam siya dati three games lang siya mawawala for the Team B of (Thailand) national team. He's supposed to be back yesterday but he extended his stay there... what else can we do?” - Ateneo athletic director Ricky Palou
The Thai mentor was originally supposed to miss just three games for the embattled Lady Eagles, but the 46-year old Bundit has yet to be back in Manila.
So what happened?
“Nagpaalam siya dati three games lang siya mawawala for the Team B of (Thailand) national team. He's supposed to be back yesterday but he extended his stay there,” said Ateneo athletic director Ricky Palou.
“Well, what else can we do?” he added.
The absence of Bundit, who replaced Roger Gorayeb at the start of the season, came at the worst time for the Lady Eagles who have floundered at a very critical time in their campaign.
Without their head coach, the Lady Eagles almost fell to the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses but managed to survive a thrilling five-setter, 15-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 15-13, on January 8.
But they later proved no match to rival and defending champion La Salle in their first round meeting a week ago, 16-25, 20-25, 16-25.
In their rematch Sunday, the unbeaten Lady Spikers repeated over the Lady Eagles, 14-25, 14-25, 19-25, to relegate their rivals to third spot with a 5-3 card.
Ateneo team manager Tony Boy Liao confirmed Bundit will be back on January 30. In his absence, assistant coach Parley Tupaz has been the one calling the shots for the Katipunan-based squad.
Now Ateneo can only hope it's not too late for Bundit to turn the Lady Eagles' season around when he returns.
