CEBU CITY – Super Liga and V-League champion Philippine Army downed UAAP titleholder Ateneo de Manila, 25-21, 25-15, 19-25, 25-22, in “The Champions Tour” exhibition match on Sunday afternoon at the University of San Carlos gym.
Cebuana Genie Sabas came up with some fine play in the early goings, while crowd favorite Rachel Anne Daquis was steady throughout to lead the Lady Troopers to victory.
Army was comfortably ahead, 23-16, in the fourth when Ateneo rallied to make it 22-23, with Michelle Morente delivering two service aces and Kassandra Gequillana scoring on a huge spike.
But the veteran Army side kept its poise and shut the door on Ateneo with two straight kills by Nerissa Bautista that secured the match for the Lady Troopers.
The Lady Troopers took control early and pulled away in the first, 21-18, with Sabas and Bautista leading the way.
They continued their impressive play in the second, racing off to a 20-12 lead behind Daquis. Ateneo then handed the set to Army with a pair of errors – a flubbed service by Mary Mae Tajima and a net violation.
Ateneo extended the match to a fourth set when Army sent in its reserves in the third, taking an 18-15 lead after a powerful spike by reigning UAAP MVP Alyssa Valdez.
Amy Ahomiro then sparked the breakaway with three straight service aces as Ateneo took the set 25-19.
