ALYSSA Valdez continues to shine for Ateneo as she leads in scoring and attacks in the UAAP Season 75 women’s volleyball tournament.
A former University of Santo Tomas high school star, Valdez was one of the vital cogs of the league-leading Lady Eagles’ remarkable five-game winning run prior to the Christmas break.
Based on the stats released by the league’s official statistician TMX Sports, Valdez registered 101 points on 91 spikes, nine service aces and a block and has a remarkable 45.96 percent success rating in attacks.
National University’s Dindin Santiago is in second place with 94 points. The 6-foot-1 Santiago, who played with Valdez in high school at UST, had 74 points, 13 service winners and seven blocks.
Santiago leads the league in service with 0.62 average per set.
Myla Pablo, another NU standout, is running third with 85 points, while Rosemarie Vargas of Far Eastern University is in fourth spot with 65 points. Vargas trails Santiago in the battle for the Best Server title with 0.57.
Ateneo’s Fille Cainglet had 57 points to place fifth in scoring.
Pablo, a sophomore who is making waves for the Lady Bulldogs this season, is the second-best attacker behind Valdez with a 40.45 percent success rate.
Defending champion La Salle has two players lording it over in the blocking department, with reigning MVP Abigail Maraño registering a league-best 0.82 average per set followed by Mika Reyes with 0.76.
The Lady Bulldogs’ top defensive specialist Jen Reyes leads in digs (3.10 average per set) and receiving (36.62 efficiency rating).
UST’s Loren Lantin is the surprise leader in setting with 6.33 average per set.
The tournament resumes on Saturday with UST and University of the East colliding in the curtain raiser at 2 p.m. and the Lady Bulldogs clashing with the Lady Tamaraws at 3:30 p.m. at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan. On the next day, Ateneo and Adamson clash at 3:30 p.m., after La Salle and University of the Philippines cross paths at 2 p.m.
